Sondheim’s 80th Birthday Celebration  21096

  • 00:00:50 “In his own words, ‘a playwright in song'”
  • 00:56:30 Interval feature
    • 01:05:40 Abell: He creates a world for every show and he’s very aware of harmonies and accompaniment figures and crafting them to the situation. Harmonies you can’t believe. His models were the early C20 composers Ravel, Prokofiev, but gone beyond that. Marrying harmonic technique with American popular song; fairly simple melodies going above very complex structures underneath, which are show-specific.
    • 01:10:50 Footage of Stephen Sondheim hearing that he will have a Broadway theatre renamed for him at Roundabout Gala in 2010.
    • 01:11:20 Stephen Sondheim: first time at a prom / in RAH. Climax of year was having theatre named after him. Loves the proms, wants to come back. David Charles Abell selected a lot of numbers and running order, sent it to Sondheim, who checked off things he really wanted and made a few suggestions, but really Abell’s work and routining. Maria and Julian and Judi, and Bryn. Only principal he hasn’t worked with directly is Caroline. Derham quoting Sondheim on Judi Dench: “she doesn’t just rent the stage, she owns it”. Where does he start: it starts with the librettist. “The kind of musicals that I write are narrative musicals, even when there’s no storyline. They’re about character.” Talks a lot with librettists. Songwriter for this show is as much of an interpreter as director / conductor / actor is. Librettist makes something out of nothing. Partly a creator. Someone has invented a story and characters. Contributes to that, but it’s his or her work. Not inspiration, but working with someone who’s invented a story. Reframing of this as advice for composers / playwrights. “If it sings to you, you write it”.
    • 01:16:30 Bryn Terfel: of those on stage, baby of the Sondheim performers.
