Five Poems

The Ruins

From the Foreword to The Burning of the Leaves: “There are two versions of the group. One appeared in Horizon in October 1942 under the title ‘The Ruins’: the other in The Atlantic Monthly in November 1942. It must have been sent to America some months earlier and the Horizon version copied from another manuscript, for when the copy of the Atlantic reached him he was surprised to note the divergencies. He made no choice between the two versions and the American one is printed here.” [Variations in the Horizon text are given on page 7].
