From BBC Proms blurb: “This world premiere blends a conventional orchestra with spatialised electronics, exploiting the unique space of the Royal Albert Hall to create, in Lewis’s words, ‘a medium for meditation on what processes of decolonisation might sound like’.”

From the interview with George Lewis at 00:02:50 in George Lewis & Beethoven’s Second Symphony: “There are 9 sound sources: the 8 speakers which are transferring the sound of the 9th sound source, the orchestra. There are 16 soloists that are being mic’d, and we can sort of fly their sounds around the space. They can be transposed up or down, so you might hear a flute that becomes a super-flute, or you might hear a bassoon that becomes a contra-ontra-ontra bassoon. I’m trying for hybrids that don’t exist in classical music. I wanted to bring into the concert hall all those things, you know, you go to the movies, you watch The Avengers and there are sounds coming from everywhere. So I though, well, I can do that. And I can make it sound just as exciting as The Avengers, or even better. When I write music, I want people to come out of the theatre and they say “wow, that was really different … I wonder what else could be different around here?” We need to think again about let’s say ‘classical’ music as an international world where the participation of people who have been assumed to be missing has, in fact, been going on forever. And so what that means is we have to change our consciousness. Suddenly, all kinds of people come into the picture, including people of colour. I want the music to present the possibility that things can be different than they are, and that we have the hope of changing things in ways that we would like.”
