This is one of the first musicals that caught my attention, in the late 1980s or early 1990s: through a tape of the OBC I borrowed from the St Andrews library, and through Michael Ball singing ‘Anthem’ on his TV show around the same time.
But it’s not until today that I’ve actually ever seen (while watching the ‘In Concert’ DVD) the entire narrative from beginning to end. I knew the show had had narrative problems, but I didn’t expect it to be quite this disappointing. The overly Gilbertian bits of Rice’s action jar (as does the whole “Global News Network” thing); those characters’ cardboard cutouts don’t fit with the very deep emotions behind the songs.
But great songs. Always.
