I remember seeing this with my good friend Franz Knappik in the West End, when it was playing on the Strand in 2001. Franz (an excellent and wide-ranging pianist) and I had been greatly enjoying playing various Kander and Ebb songs together (particularly the theme from “New York, New York”, as made famous by Sinatra), but neither of us enjoyed the show very much at all. Franz was particularly disappointed. I wonder how I’d enjoy it now …
